Questions about disassembling the engine.

Hi guys,
I've got my engine out and I'm looking for advise on taking it apart and putting it back together.
From what little info I've found, it seams the engine case and the transmission share the same oil. Is the clutch a wet clutch, like on some motorcycles?
I can't find an oil filter on this engine. Does it simply not have one, like VW beetles?
I've also been trying to locate a shop or rebuild manual for my Honda Z600, but apparently auto parts stores simply can't get one. I will eventually need to know torque specs and journal sizes. Does anyone know where I can get this info, or where I can get an engine rebuilding manual??
Any info would be much appreciated.

I'm a student at our local community college and I'm rebuilding the engine in our auto lab. It's nice to be able to use actual shop equipment instead of using a fence comalong tied to a tree limb hanging over my car in the backyard of my house.
We removed the back wheels to, and put the remaining 500lb of car on a small stand with wheels and pushed it into the corner of the shop:

Now that I've got the engine and tranny into the engine lab, I can tear it all apart:

Any advise or precautions I should be taking would be worth more than gold to me at this point.

OIL filter is where the screen in a VW is in the center of the block.It has a dry clutch  (a little tiny one )  And I have shop and parts manuals and can send specs when you need them. Trans shares same oil as engine. Also after disassemble  pay attention to all components of timing chain as that is a week area. The slipper pins have a habit of eating up block and cylinder housing where they fit in. And that is just one tip of several you should know.    Brad,   Classic Auto Service Dallas From:

Are you sure you want to try to rebuild the engine by yourself ? I'm not trying to be a smart ass but you took the engine out and didn't see the oil filter? From what I know, and I know very little, these engines are not easy to rebuild unless you have had a lot of experience. All I can say is good luck !

Hi Mike,
    The manuals you need to help you work on your Z600 can be found at Steve's site...click here .
Take a look at both the coupe and the sedan shop manuals ..... they complement each other.  Also,  the parts catalogs have exploded views of the engine which will help during assembly and let you know the correct bolt sizes.  You will find the Z600 engine has more in common with a 1972 motorcycle than it does with a 1972 car.  If you can find the parts, the 600 engine is easier to rebuild than a Honda Civic.  Try to not damage the gaskets as you disassemble the engine ... you may be able to reuse them or use them as a template to make a new gasket.
   The biggest obstacle I can see for you is removing the rotor.  It takes a special bolt which most auto shops do not have.   Check the posts from the past couple months for information on the rotor removal tools size and some possible products which may work.
   One last thing,  when you take the engine apart, you will take off lots of bolts from the sides and bottom of the engine.
There is one bolt which has a 10mm head and is directly behind the cylinder barrel which needs to be removed to split the crankcase.  It is about 8 inches long.  If you don't remove this bolt,  the casing does not come apart.

The oil filter is not a screw-on...it's hiding inside.  See page 1-28 and 29 of the parts catalog.

Hi Mike, get the manual as others have said.
This is more of a motorcycle engine and all aluminum.
So removing bolts that have been oxidized in place for 38 years can be tough. Penetrating oil, loosen/tighten/loosen method and sometimes heat works.
A fun project and your car body looks great.
Have fun ask questions, the folks on here have a lot of experience with these cars.
