Hey there, I posted this on the other group but hadn't heard anything.
so I'll repeat myself:
After obtaining a bunch of parts from craigslist over the summer, I am trying to
piece together a complete engine. Even though there are some parts that I am
missing, I taking my time to clean up the parts that I do have. One of those
parts is an intact crankcase. It is next in line to clean by sandblasting, but
I wanted to check with the group to see if you can offer up suggestions on what
to be careful about since I haven't cracked one open before.

I am sure some one here will help you on this. I have never taken mine apart but there is a lot of people here that can help you. They might just not be around right now.

The reason for my reply is regarding your plan to sandblast or beadblast the case. I would advise against it. In my experience it is very difficult to get all of the sand or glass beads out of all the nooks and crannies of the casting. Any remaining material is at risk of being picked up by your oil pump. True it should then be captured by the oil filter but the oil pump it not protected. The oil pumps on these engines are marginal and don't need to be compromised. Just my two cents.

Someone out there said an oil plug from a vw touareg with shims would work as a flywheel puller. What year must it be or are they all the same?

I looked into it and I am not exactly sure, but I think it would be any year touareg with the 4.2 V8. The size is 24mm x 1.5 Good luck.
