Finally took posession of my Z600

Hi just chiming in. I subscribed a year ago when i put my down payment on a Z600. Last week I picked it up.
Shows 20k+ miles. Body mostly straight with less than typical rust. Interior good-ish.
Looks mostly complete with a few exceptions. I'm going to try to get it mechanically sound before I start looking for cosmetic replacement parts. From initial inspection that would include a steering wheel with horn and right side (passenger) visor. Possibly passenger window parts. Not too bad!
I work on vintage motorcycles for a "living" presently so I'm not afraid of what I might find inside the engine. Last owner said it "got a new cam chain" so from my experience that means I shouldn't be too surprised to find mangled slapped valves in there. It's in a trailer right now but i should have pictures of it's next temporary home this week. So, here's hoping it's a mostly uneventful restoration!

Congrats on getting your Z600. I have owned many many cars, and the Honda 600 is the most fun to drive out of any I have ever had. Since you are familiar with vintage machines I probably don't have to tell you that you need to make sure the fuel tank is spotless inside first if it has been sitting, and sounds like you already know about the timing chain slippers and tensioners. I would however suspect it has 120k miles on it as the chain shouldn't have been bad at 20k miles. Good luck with it and enjoy. Brad From:

My engine had slapped valves. All four valves were slightly bent, and yet the car was still running. I really don't know how.

Many years ago a 2-3 upshift went wrong and became a 2-1 downshift (having run 2nd gear out to the shift point) and I bent valves. Mine still ran and I couldn't even detect any problem starting. I only discovered the bent valves later when a broken ring lead to some oil consumption and necessitated an overhaul.
I'm still amazed it ran at all.

Good news. The head wasn't cracked in any critical place and I was able to have the cam box repaired. Everything is back together. I assembled the top end and I have 160psi on the left and 170 psi on the right. I think I'm okay now! Can't wait to put the rest of the parts back on.
Cleaning the carb at work today on my lunch break!

PS - I posted a bunch of as found photos please take a peek. Looks pretty good for a start, at least it does to me. I've had a lot worse projects than this one.

Great to hear, but the PSI at + or - 10 psi can cause vibration. Start your engine and retest the cylinder pressure when warm.
I will bet they are almost the same.
