Rebuilt ENG?

What's up Guys
So around wen winter comes in California img planning to park n drop my engine
1. To continue sanddin down the car
2. Water gets in the car so i can't drive it in the rain
3. To rebuilt the ENG
So my question for u guys... Is should i rebuilt it my self with the help of my cousin who is pretty much a Honda mechanic (but would be the first time that we work on an 600 ENG) or should i take it to get rebuilt with a guy that deals with the 600 ENG (he's 6hours away though)
let me know ur opinion n how much would it cost me to do my self

Hell yea, we dip down to -1 Celsius sometimes 2 or 3 time a year.

I would suggest take it apart and go through it. That is the best way to understand how it all works. I would first run a compression test just to see if you will need to pay attention to certain areas. Make sure you acquire shop manuals and parts manuals, the parts manuals have exploded views of everything which can be helpful on reassembly. Examine and clean all parts thoroughly. If you find metal shavings in the engine, determine where it came from. These engines are not very difficult, but tolerances are very critical, so follow manuals and check all specs carefully. Also a very week point of these engines is the timing chain and guides and guide pins, that usually always needs all parts replaced.  Also remember,this is an air cooled engine, all cooling parts are very critical,leave nothing off.
Some mechanics that work on water cooled tend to think some parts are not needed and leave them off. Also all tune specs need to be exact, guessing at ignition timing can burn them up. Anyway, that is my suggestions, jump in, take your time and do it right and don't be afraid to ask questions through the process.  Brad Fenn, (Classic Auto Service Dallas)
