Z600 Engine rebuild
I received a quote for $3500 for a Honda 600 engine specialist to rebuild for my '72 Honda z600. What do you guys think?

Re: Z600 Engine rebuild
there was a lengthy discussion about this a while back when Tim Mings rebuilt someones motor for them and they were very unhappy because they were expecting a restore/rebuild not just a rebuild. you need to find out exactly what is being done. Are they going to just rebuild the internals and make it run or are they sandblasting all the casings so they look like new, repainting heat covers, adding newly plated bolts or reusing old ones.
Is it a top end rebuild only or going through the entire gear box as well? new pistons and rings or just honing the cylinders and using the old ones?
i just had my head and block freshened up by Mike Oconnor for about 300$ included the head and block being sandblasted to look new again, cleaning up any bad bolt holes, recut the valves and seats. bore the block to .25 over.
The engine rebuild is 1 thing making it look like new is a whole different job.
on a side not Ray Cave has a rebuilt motor for sale on ebay for 1800$

Thank you Eric, this is a VERY valuable response! Much to consider before making a decision. I have bought tons of things from Ray, he's the closest Honda 600 "God" closest to me in Houston.

Re: Z600 Engine rebuild
I have a local small engines mechanic who knows these engines very well and he has no problem rebuilding anything on these, you guys may try a motorcycle mechanic from way back with some luck for a rebuild.
