I'm all about finding the performance edge. Especially, with these little cars. They need every little bit and every little bit counts. I've gone through full performance tune up on this 600cc 4stroke air cooled wonder. Ignition timing is perfect. Cam timing dead on. New coil wires, new points, new plugs and wires. I'm now sorting the carburetor for maximum performance, here I am trying to richen up the jetting a tad by spacing the main needle. It runs much better and feels "pretty" good, but not "stellar" however. Until I install a wide band oxygen sensor to precisely measure air fuel ratio, it's just a guess. My wideband tuned 25 hp. 360cc 2 stroke Subaru 360 hits 62 mph in the same 1/4 mile span as this untuned 37 hp 600cc 4 stroke OHC Honda 600. I need to make some more tuning test runs, I'm not exactly sure, but there has got to be more "oomph" to be found. I'm bound to get it.

I have thought about an oil cooler. Our climate rarely gets hot, I've been driving the car in 30 degree temps lately, I've been told I don't need it. In fact, B & B said I should block the incoming air with card board because it's been too cold.

DO NOT BLOCK THE INCOMING AIR.
Your engine needs all the air cooling it can get. Do check the air flow gate on the front of the air cleaner horn is set to winter for your coupe. The warm air from the heat exchanger section will help prevent carburetor icing.
Regarding your super-tuning the Z600, here are some items to consider;
1. Verify the engine compression is correct. Each cylinder should read about 160 to 165 psi.
2. Check the tailpipe emissions. How do they compare with the standards published by your DEQ.
3. Check for air leaks at the intake manifold where carb attaches and where manifold attaches to intake (an o-ring is at this junction).
4. When your weather is above 50 degrees, try running your tests with the air cleaner and air cleaner cover removed to check for air restriction on the intake side.
5. Put a scope on the ignition side and check how the plugs are firing. You might want to consider an improved ignition system to get better combustion timing.
6. And you could do some exhaust tuning.
7. Check that the car doesn't have any brake drag when rolling.
8. When you are at 55 mph, does your car exhibit any wheel vibrations?
9. How long is it taking the car to get to the 1/4 mile mark? A new car would have made this mark in 22 seconds.

No doubt it had or has rusty cylunders. No amount of hope in the world will fix that, except it seems the more I drive it the stronger it it gets. It had terrible blow by, now almost none.

There is a operating temp that the engine runs to, and it will continue to heat up. But that aside it provides a larger filter, an Oilstat (like a thermostat) which keeps the oil flowing into the engine and not the cooling coils until it reaches 165 degrees. And a PH8A filter is much easier to find does a better job and cheaper too. A trip down the freeway in 60 degree weather does not open the Oilstat on my cars for a few miles. But it does open and the oil temp is maintained. Giving it not only longer oil life but keeps the engine running with oil that is maintaining its viscosity.
The cover for the engine was more to get the engine warmer faster on the early Honda 600’s that didn’t use the exhaust manifold heat collectors the later ones had than to get and keep the engine at operating temp’s. I have an accessory page that shows one, but it too had openings to allow some air in.
