Swapping motors

Post by Troy »

OK, I might have an opportunity to buy a 1971 Honda AZ600 that needs restored and I was wondering if anyone knows if the engine from a 1989 Honda Hurricane 1000cc will mate to the transmission from the '71 honda 600??

There is a set of Youtube videos with a guy putting a Honda Hurricane 600cc motor in one. Should be close. I don't have a recent link.  Bill

Was it a white Honda 600 up on a lift? If so I found it. Thanks.

The engine and transmission on the 600 cars are in the same housing.   It is not like most cars where the tranny and engine are separate.  It is more like a 1970s motorcycle where the engine and tranny share a casing.

Arg, well that sucks, so I would most likely have to find an original engine for it or totally mod another engine and tranny to fit the car.

I think it started white, but it's red now. Looks like a lot of work.  Bill

Hey Troy.. I was at your crossroads awhile back (rebuild stocker or do a transplant).. I chose to do a repower with an older (1998) Honda VFR800- one of the very few bike engines that will fit(?!?) in the funky engine bay.. If it's any help I have a build log on it over at
http://locostusa.com/forums/viewtopic.p ... 52&start=0
No video yet, but I drive it pretty much daily.. As you'll see, not an easy swap; but fun and challenging ;-)
While doing research, I never did find a truly 'easy' engine swap for these N/Z600s.. actually found very few swaps documented..
Good luck whatever you do-- fun cars and attention you've never gotten in any other car..

Finding a suitable alternative and actually fitting it into the engine bay and making it run would be a huge undertaking. However, these engines do come up occasionally, so don't give up on finding an original engine. There are lots of these cars out there, and plenty are being scrapped or parted out. I also have a while slew of extra parts including engine casings and internals, but cannot sell until I get the rest of my projects together to see what I have, and what I may need for my own cars. I may also sell a whole car which is complete and running. Chas

Mark, Yea, I watched your videos a few days ago about the engine swap, love it, and the comment about it sounding like it was running on flubber in the 1st video was hilarious, lol. One of the issues I have is figuring out how to give it reverse, any ideas?
