Dale is corrrect on the Mechanics Stethoscope, it's been a part of my tool box for many years. But you have to use it correctly, hold it by the metal rod and not the plastic collector at the top of the metal rod. And if one is not available, a long screw driver held to the ear and touching the area you want to check will also give some indication of where the sound is coming from.
