Hi Ken;
Well, I have seen this before, only it was on a full synchro trans and it too was running.  The problem is finding a complete full synchro transmission, which includes the differential.  And you need to cut a (see below) on the center fin in the bottom half of the engine case.  Which allows the bottom half of the case to mate with a full synchro trans changed in a constant transmission case.  There are lots of constant transmission parts available.  I have a couple of boxes of everything you need.
If the full synchro trans is the way you want to go, you will need every part from the full synchro trans case to make the change.  Check the parts manual to make sure what parts even bolts that need to be changed out.
Oil Filter cavity
Cut along the dotted line (this is about a one inch cut)
Rest the safts in place to make sure it's deep enough.
Rear of engine case
This is 3 inches from the bottom of the cut to the bottom of the fin.
So
measure one inch from the top of the 3 inch mark you make on the fin
and measure a one inch long cut at the top.
Not all castings are the same
so you have to check your cut.
