Hello all.
I am rebuilding my N600 1971 engine.
I happen to have a later model engine that cannot be used and it has a good set of synchro gear assemblies.
Can I replace the dog gear assemblies with the synchro assemblies? I would also replace the shift plates.
Thanks.

Hi Greg;
Yes, and if you look through the postings in the group it's all there. But you will have to cut one of the center fins on the top half of the case. Easy to do and all of the parts to the synchro trans including the differential and speedometer gear must be replaced.

Re: 1971 N600 gearbox
In a later post Bill notes that the syncro trans can be installed on the earlier engine by cutting down a flange inside the pan. I did this a number of years ago and it has worked just fine. I did also change the differential gears, but the note in Bill's reply about replacing the speedomoter is new to me. Since I was working with a mechanic who did all the actual work after we opened it up and decided to put the syncro trans in, he might have changed the speedomoter himself and I might have forgotten.

Thanks Stephen.
I will compare the speedo pinion and gear from each unit to see if there is any difference.

the full synchro trans speedometer gear is 16 teeth, the non-synchro gear is 15 teeth. And the differential for the full synchro is 80 teeth while the non-synchro is 82 teeth.

Re: 1971 N600 gearbox
Yep, 15 teeth will make your full synchro trans tell your speedometer that you’re going about 60 when the speedometer is saying 65.

Re: 1971 N600 gearbox
All right. All good to know. At some future point I will check on all of the above. Since the first trans swap I have replaced that engine with the original engine, the 'crashbox? trans and now I would like to swap trans again at some future date. Thanks again for the info. Valuable stuff. Peace.
