Sounds like 2 problems. Even if charging circuit is not working vehicle still should not die when the choke is let off. Make sure battery is full charged, fuel solenoid clicks when given power, and then find out why it won`t idle. Plugged idle circuit in carb, vacuum leak, timing, valve adjustment all come to mind. Once it idles fine then you can troubleshoot the charging issue.
Wiring connections, grounds especially, are problematic on all older cars.
Voltage regulators can be bypassed momentarily to full field the alternator seeing if it even puts out. Any more questions ask. I owned one of these in the late 70`s and no one else would even touch it. Just bought me another!

What was the idle fix?
If it's burning oil and blowing smoke, there's only one way to fix it properly. Thicker oil may help. Motorcycle specific oil will make no difference.

new piston rings as a minimum I'd suggest.

The rings and valves can be checked with a simple compression test. When you do the test try and have the engine warm with both spark plugs removed and the throttle open. If you don’t have a compression test tool they are available from parts stores like Auto Zone.
Remove the Anti Dieseling Solenoid and look to see if the pin retracts with the ignition on and see if the O-ring is still good. Both can cause problems.
