turned out to be a spark arrestor from an old generator. Part of the
exhaust pupe was some type of flexible metal hose that rattled like
crazy and made all kinds of noise! The glasspak seems to work but
it's a bit loud. I'd sure like to find an original exhaust system.

    You have hit the nail on the head.  Engines are pumps, volumn in = volumn out.  Because of the reformulated fuel we are burning having a larger our more open exhaust should not be a problem, nor should the carb.  But leave the top off your air box and see if it run's better/easier to adjust.  I have had to cut parts of air box's out in the back (so they don't show) because the snorkel is to restrictive.  Not much different at idle but what a difference at speed.   Also, mufflers made these days are already less restrictive because they are all made for vehicles that have catalytic converters on them.
